Bequests and Estate Planning
The day will come when each and every one of us will leave this Earth. The wise course of action is to anticipate and prepare ahead a smooth transition of our belongings, easing the burden of those we care about that are left behind.
Many of you members have over the course of a lifetime accumulated significant orchid related assets— not just plants, but also growing equipment, supplies, books, art, etc.
Our vision as an orchid organization includes serving as a facilitator for a harmonious transition of those orchid assets left behind. A good example would be the recent passing of our longtime member Larry Vierheilig. Our club members were able to work with the family, giving interim plant care, helping family keep and care for selected plants, and organizing and auctioning the remainder, proceeds going to several orchid organizations.
We encourage our members to take advantage of our society’s resources. Take the time to assess your possessions. Decide how you wish to have them distributed upon your passing, and prepare written instructions, placing those written instructions with other important documents. Going further, you may wish to consult legal counsel for the most thorough handling of your particular situation.
As this is a delicate and highly nuanced subject, we encourage anyone with any concerns to approach a board member.
Remember, these are your possessions and your wishes. The society’s goal is to do our best to carry out your requests.
