Happy New Year
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Hope you all had a Merry Christmas and that you, your family, and your orchids are happy and healthy. Thanks for voting me in again as the FCOS president. I am also happy that Chuck Scheithauer stepped forward to be our new Vice-President. Christina Holenda has stayed on as Treasurer and Judy Scheithauer is still the Secretary. Bonnie Werring, Anne Bachman, and Chris Spence are our Directors-at-Large.
I would like to thank Linda Hauss ( Past-President) and Alan Durham (Past Director at Large) for their service to the FCOS society over the last two years. I also want to give a BIG THANK YOU to Eric Holenda for his eleven years as the FCOS vice president and setting up a variety of great speakers during those years, along with being the orchid show chairman for a number of those years.
In case you did not hear Eric's Cirropetalum Elizabeth Ann 'Buckleberry' won Best of Show at the Santa Barbara Orchid Society Show that was held in November. Hopefully you attended our December meeting as were able to see the orchid that he brought in to share with the group.
The show committee has been diligently working on setting up all aspects of our 21st annual show. Please mark the weekend of April 1-3, 2016 on your calendar and plan to help put on our greatest show ever. You will be happy you did. The Friday night fundraiser will again help generate funds for the Dunes Center. We have some new ideas that we plan to try to increase attendance and also some things that will hopefully make the show more fun and interesting for all those that attend.
Our December gala was quite successful. The food was soooo good. The plants on the auction table were irresistible. Unfortunately, there are not many pictures of the event because the secretary was too busy eating from the buffet and bidding on the plants.
Our next meeting is on Thursday, Jan 14th at the Arroyo Grande Woman's Club. The meeting will feature a presentation by Dan Asbell on how to stake your Cymbidium flower spikes so they will present the flowers properly for judging. Dan and his father Bob own and operate Asbell Orchids in Arroyo Grande and have specialized in growing Cymbidiums for many years. He will be providing an opportunity for you to ask any questions you have in growing Cymbidium covering watering/fertilizing, light, temperature, potting mix and best time to repot and divide. Dan will be providing the plant table and will also be bring some of his Cymbidiums for direct sale.
